Terms of Services

  1. Introduction
  2. The policies and guidelines presented here apply to all computing services offering by the Centre for Information Technology in Education (CITE) . In this document, the term "user" refers to any person consuming resources on our CITE facilities. These facilities or services include portable computers usage in laboratories, computer network access, file system storage on servers, printing service and all software applications offered on different computer platforms.

  3. Disclaimers
  4. CITE makes available to faculty, staff, students and others, computing services consisting of hardware, software and documentation. The use and operation of these services is subject to the following disclaimers:

    • User agrees that use of the services is at the user's sole risk. User must evaluate, and bear all risks associated with, the use of any content, including reliance on the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any content.
    • User understands and agrees that any material or data downloaded or otherwise obtained through the use of services is done at the user's own discretion and risk. User will be solely responsible for any damage to his/her computer system or loss of data that results from the usage of such material or data.
    • The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. Although CITE will use reasonable endeavors to support and maintain our services, we make no warranty that the services will meet your requirements, or that the services will be uninterrupted, timely, secure, or error free.
    • Every effort will be made by CITE to prevent loss of data in the event of hardware or software failure or through human error. This is done by making regular backup copies of data stored on the servers to magnetic tape or other media. It must be recognized, however, that in rare cases it may not be possible to restore the latest version of every data file from these backups, and some data loss may occur. In these cases, CITE is not liable for any loss of data arising directly or indirectly.

  5. Rights and Responsibilities
  6. Users have the following rights and responsibilities:

    • User is responsible for supplying accurate personal information. Providing false or misleading information for the purpose of obtaining our services is a violation of CITE policy.
    • Users are responsible for selecting a secure password for their account and keeping their passwords secret at all time.
    • Each user is responsible for any or all activities initiated in his or her account or on CITE facilities.
    • Users are responsible all the time using our services or facilities in a manner that is ethical, legal, and not to the detriment of others.
    • Users are responsible for obeying all official notices posted in laboratories.
    • Users are urged to report any system security violation, or suspected system security violation, to CITE staff or to the email address system@cite.hku.hk immediately.

  7. Privacy Policy
  8. CITE will treat the information you submitted strictly confidential. Your information will not be disclosed to any external bodies or organizations unless you have been informed or required by law. Because the goals of CITE are primarily educational in nature, computer systems are generally open to perusal and investigation by users. Security controls may be less restrictive than they would be in other environments. Although an appropriate effort is made to maintain system security, unauthorized access to information is possible through malicious mischief. CITE cannot guarantee against loss of privacy, theft of information, damage, or loss of data arising directly or indirectly from the absence or failure of system security protection mechanisms.

  9. Modifications to Terms and Services
  10. CITE may change the terms and conditions of services from time to time. User acknowledges that CITE may modify or discontinue any of the services with or without notice to user.
